How does a family cope with an incurable disease?

This is our story, the French family, and the journey we took together as we were faced with the unexpected news of Lou Gehrig’s Disease or better known as A.L.S.

Tom French, a devoted husband, piano player extraordinaire, and meticulous plastic surgeon, had high hopes for his career and his family until he was diagnosed with A.L.S.  A.L.S. is completely debilitating, ultimately causing one to live life on a ventilator, and in most cases leads to death. This disease was the French family’s “beast.”

This is our love story and a unique perspective of our timeline and the next chapters in our lives. The journey isn’t over, and we hope to raise awareness, strengthen families, and through our story ease some of the fears anyone would face in such circumstances.

Love wins in the end and what set to destroy us only made us stronger.

The Documentary

Mind Games is the story of how one family began a new life after a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (A.L.S.), one of the most devastating terminal illnesses. Dr. Tom French of Barnard, Vermont outlived the standard two to five year “invariably fatal” prognosis and continued to thrive at home with his family and a crew of dedicated caregivers for almost a decade.

Mind Games will serve as a lasting tribute to Tom, his family and his caregivers. It will also be used to raise awareness about terminal illnesses and quality end-of-life care.

Hope is the last thing that dies in a man, and although it be exceedingly deceitful, yet it is of good use to us, that while we are traveling through life it conducts us in an easier and more pleasant way to our journey’s end.
